Much as the famous Reese's peanut-butter cup owes its design to two people bumping into each other and creating something new, MarketCoach came about through a coincidental meeting of a stock broker frustrated with the market pressures that prevented him from educating his clients, and a computer training expert looking for content to present using interactive Web-based technologies. Both Michael Homer and Glenn Weadock lived in Golden, Colorado, and their families became friends. A dinner at a nearby restaurant turned into an exploration of how the financial community could better serve investors. Over pasta and pizza, Michael explained that many of his brokerage customers did not know what they were doing, and that the brokerage industry was moving away from being able to educate them in the basics. Glenn felt that the problem was well suited to software that could act both as an education instrument and as a reference, as long as the product was designed with great ergonomics and an understanding of how people learn. Both knew that the necessary information was already available in a thousand websites, books, and magazines; but they found that nobody had assembled it into a convenient, clear, organized and user-friendly form. They got to work and five years later, MarketCoach is ready for market. |
The overriding mission of MarketCoach is simple: to empower the novice and intermediate investor to make informed long-term investment decisions. We do this by teaching the basics of investing in a way that is independent, objective, and trustworthy. Much (probably most) of the financial advice available in books, magazines, and the Net has the ulterior motive of promoting a particular product, service, or company. Not MarketCoach. This mission led us to package MarketCoach in a convenient "one-stop shop" form. To ensure that MarketCoach is the best single source of information for novice and intermediate investors, we crafted the product so that it is just as useful as an occasional reference or as a highly structured learning program. Speaking of convenience, MarketCoach works on virtually every Windows PC. Its friendly interface brings the material to life, with charts, graphs, photos, sounds, videos, and live links to engage the investor who may be unfamiliar with core financial concepts. |
Before the mid-1970’s, investing in the stock market was mainly for the rich. Then, in 1975, the brokerage firm commission structure became deregulated. Investors could shop around for the lowest commission, opening the door for the advent of the discount brokerage firm. The next three decades brought tremendous growth for the industry, and the Internet brought the most sweeping changes. It let investors perform virtually any service or function that their stock broker could perform: do research, make decisions and place trades. A major problem arose, however. Investors did not have the fundamental knowledge to make informed investing decisions based on all the information they now had at their fingertips. Investors had great data, but no tools to interpret and understand it. What the financial industry had done was like giving someone the keys to a high performance sports car, but not teaching them how to drive it. Brokers can no longer take the time to educate their clients. Investors want to learn about investing, but without any sales pitches for a particular investment product or service. Investors want a tool to help them acquire the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. Proper education to guide decisions remains the key missing piece. MarketCoach provides this piece. |
Interactive & Engaging. Through quizzes that provide custom feedback, an “investment I.Q.” test, sophisticated financial calculators, mouseovers, and pop-ups, MarketCoach gets the user involved. Edited by an author who has written for the “Dummies” series, MarketCoach makes the content approachable and clear. Friendly. When financial markets are in crisis, investors are reminded that they must do their homework and invest wisely. Recent events have made it clear that making money in investing is not automatic! Still, putting your money under a mattress may not be your best course of action. Brokerages are curtailing their personal services, raising their fees, or both. No complete, independent educational resource existed for novice investors — until now. MarketCoach provides everything the beginning investor needs to know for a basic understanding of markets and securities in one friendly, convenient, unbiased product. Unlike public websites, MarketCoach is comprehensive (broad and deep); understandable (no doubletalk); independent (no financial products to sell); focused (no annoying ads); convenient (everything in one place); and interactive (quizzes, calculators, multimedia clips). Unlike books, MarketCoach is interactive; timely (up-to-date, and easily updatable); convenient (with live links to useful Web sites); engaging (full color graphics, stereo sound, etc.); deep (with more “meat” than many books); and searchable (full-text, better than any book index). |
